Ju Yong Chol, a North Korean diplomat, spoke at a U.N.-sponsored Conference on Disarmament after the U.S. disarmament ambassador Robert Wood said that President Donald Trump’s “top priority” was to protect the United States and its allies against the “growing threat” from North Korea.
North Korea’s strengthening of its nuclear force is “a legitimate option for self-defense” in the face of threats from the United States, Ju told the Geneva forum.
Fears have grown over North Korea’s development of missiles and nuclear weapons since Pyongyang launched intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs) in July.
Those fears worsened after Trump warned North Korea would face “fire and fury” if it threatened the United States.
