Bolt, an Uber competitor, has launched its food distribution service, Bolt Food, in Kenya, making it the third African country to do so after South Africa and Ghana. The distribution service is now accessible in Parklands, Westlands, Highridge, Spring Valley, Kitisuru, Lavington, South C, South B, Kilimani, Upperhill, and Valley Arcade, according to the Estonian start-up.
Bolt, formerly known as Taxify, is joining an increasingly competitive sector of food distribution rivals in Europe. Uber Eats and Jumia Foods are rapidly spreading throughout the city, and Glovo, a Spanish on-demand delivery startup, recently expanded to rural areas such as Ngong and Ongata Rongai towns as part of its country-wide expansion plans.
The company claims to have taken a novel approach to onboarding 200 restaurants in Kenya, including KFC, Big Square, Pizza Mojo, Urban Gourmet Burger, and Debonairs Pizza, with plans to add more daily.
“Food delivery has long been a common request, and we are delighted to provide this service to the millions of customers who use our app. Our ride-hailing company has provided us with the infrastructure and expertise we need to broaden and diversify our services. We have a long history of disrupting markets, and we will extend that knowledge to our food distribution program, which will include low delivery costs, improved working practices for our couriers, and a range of our favorite brands. Bolt Food Country Manager Edgar Kipngetich Kitur said, "We're launching with great restaurant deals and free shipping."
“We are committed to transforming the food delivery sector in Kenya through quality services at affordable costs. We continue to serve our customers better and provide a viable economic opportunity to thousands of people. All existing drivers are welcome to join the delivery platform, but we will be using motorbikes as our primary means of delivering food to ensure fast, efficient service but have bicycles and skaters,” added Edgar Kipngetich Kitur.
The food delivery service would be available through a separate app called Bolt Food, and the users need to download the app to pick a restaurant in the app, see its menu and select the foods they wish to order. Before confirming the order, users will see the cost of their shopping basket and the approximate delivery time. They can then select their preferred means of payment, and a receipt will be sent to their email address.
