If you don't have a National Identity Number, you'll be imprisoned for 14 years (NIN)

Nigeria is the place where everything happens... Just a note, if you haven't applied for a National Identity Number (NIN), you risk spending 14 years in prison, according to the minister of information.

As of March 31, 2021, 51 million people had registered for a National Identification Number (NIN). Dr. Isa Pantami, Minister of Communication and Digital Economy, announced this at the Presidential Communication Media Team's weekly press conference in Abuja on Thursday.

He also announced that the country had about 189 million SIM (Secure Identity Module) subscribers. Just 150 million people out of 189 million have completed their registration, according to the minister, with the rest having issues of improper registration.

Pantami reminded all citizens to enroll for the NIN, warning that those yet to obtain the NIN risk seven or 14 years imprisonment as stipulated by the Nigerian Constitution.

“Based on the requirement by law every citizen and the legal resident must obtain his/her National Identification Number (NIN), which is being coordinated by the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC).

While it is a mandatory obligation, many residents refuse to adhere. “What we have accomplished in the field of enrolment since Mr. President instructed me to supervise NIMC is unparalleled, and we will continue to ensure that within the next few years, we have an almost full database of all our people in the region.

According to him, while obtaining a SIM card may be optional, NIN is mandatory, noting that a lot of transactions in the country are not supposed to be carried out without NIN. (NAN)
